Travelling to Spain with a pet from an EU country
If you are planning a holiday with your pet in Spain and you come from a member country of the European Union, don’t forget to pack these essential documents in your suitcase:
- Upto-date health card, as the animal must have all vaccinations in order.
- Certificate of good health. You can ask for it 1 or 2 weeks before the trip. This document certifies that your pet is in good health, without being a danger to others.
- Civil liability insurance and licence, in case it is a PDD (potentially dangerous dog).
- European passport for the movement of pets. You can get it from your veterinary clinic.
Also, remember that your pet must have an approved microchip, as this is required by law.
Travelling to Spain with a pet from a non-EU country
To bring in a pet from a non-EU country, you must enter with your pet through one of the designated travellers’ Points of Entry, and declare to the Guardia Civil Tax Guard that you are travelling with a pet, presenting the pet’s documentation:
- Upto-date health card, as the animal must have all vaccinations in order.
- Certificate of good health. You can ask for it 1 or 2 weeks before the trip. This document certifies that your pet is in good health, without being a danger to others.
- Civil liability insurance and licence, in case it is a PDD (potentially dangerous dog).
- European passport for the movement of pets (in case you have it). You can get it from your veterinary clinic.
If you do not have a European passport for the movement of pet animals, the animals must be accompanied by:
- An animal health certificate, which must be signed by an official veterinarian of your country and be presented at least in Spanish.
- A declaration, in accordance with EU models.
- Certified copy of identification and vaccination data of the animal.
