Before starting the trip
If you are going to venture out to travel by car with your pet, the ideal is that you have already made some short trips so that he/she gets used to the vehicle and doesn’t associate it with something negative. Moreover, you will avoid stress, nerves and even panic attacks.
When getting into the car, it is advisable that your furry companion fasts for at least 2 hours (especially in the case of dogs), since, if he/she suffers any dizziness, the consequences will be milder.
Safety first
For everyone’s safety, the pet must be leashed when traveling by car. If it is loose, it could distract the driver or be thrown away in the event of an accident.
The most common methods of properly restraining your pet are as follows:
- Carrier: depending on the type of animal and its size, the carrier may be the best option. It will be placed in the area reserved for the feet of the rear seats or in the trunk (as long as it is ventilated and it is a large carrier).
- Harness: if you prefer your travel companion to occupy the rear seats and its size allows it, there are harnesses compatible with the belt. In this way, he/she will travel safely and securely.
- Separation grille: if your pet is large and you prefer it to have more space and some mobility, you can install a grille that separates the trunk from the rest of the vehicle.
Don’t forget the documentation
Depending on the area you are traveling to, the documentation required will be different.
The first thing to do is to make sure that all vaccinations are up to date, as this will be reflected in the vaccination record. To travel you will need a certificate of good health, which certifies that your pet is in a good state of health.
If your dog is classified as a PPP (potentially dangerous dog), you will also need to have insurance.
Other tips
In addition to the essential items such as food, water or leash, it is a good idea to carry in the car objects with which it is usually in contact, such as a stuffed animal or blanket. Your pet will feel much more comfortable!
It is advisable to continue with your routine as much as possible, respecting the time of your walks and meals. Plan several stops, especially if it is a long journey. Remember that this is not only advisable for your pet, but also for you!
Finally, it is advisable to have a protective cover for the seats or the trunk, a brush to remove hair from the upholstery and a vacuum cleaner.
Destination is the most important thing!
Once you are ready to travel by car with your pet, all that remains is to choose the destination 👉 At Alannia Resorts we have pet-friendly accommodations, we are waiting for you! 🐶
