With its mild climate, hundreds of kilometres of sandy beaches (thanks to its Costa Blanca location), theme parks, and child-friendly accommodation, it is a popular choice for thousands of families every year. To ensure you have the best family holidays in Alicante, we’ve compiled this family-friendly guide:
Castle of Santa Barbara
The Santa Barbara Castle is a 10th century fortress located in the centre of Alicante. It is one of the biggest medieval fortresses in Spain, and stands on top Mount Benacantil – offering breathtaking views of the surroundings. Admission is free for the castle and the Museum of the City of Alicante (located inside). To get to the top, you can walk, drive, or take a lift at €2,70 per person.
Guadalest Valley
Guadalest Valley, a beautiful village just one hour away from Alicante, is set high up on a pinnacle and carved out of a mountain top. You can view the valley from the town without paying the €4 entrance fee, but it’s well worth going to the castle and historic home. Hire a car, drive up the mountains, and stop at the Antonio Marco Dolls House Museum where you can see beautifully decorated doll houses that took the sculptor 15 years to complete.
Canelobre Caves
Located a mere 23 km away from Alicante, the Canelobre Caves were formed over 150 million years ago. If you’re lucky, you can watch a classical music concert, which sometimes takes place in the caves. However, the majority of visitors come to see the interesting shapes of the natural rock formations. Some of these stalagmites and stalactites resemble a candelabra, a jellyfish, and a dragon’s head.
THINGS TO DO
Splash around at Aqualandia
Aqualandia is one of Europe’s biggest water parks. It has a great range of water rides, slides, and splash pools for the whole family. If you’re feeling brave, try the Kamikaze, The Black Hole, and The Big Bang (Europe’s highest chute ride). There are many restaurants and shops on site, perfect for replenishing after an adrenaline-filled day.
Marvel at the animals at Terra Natura wildlife park
Terra Natura wildlife park is home to more than 1,500 animals, representing 200 different species. This new generation wildlife park allows you to come into contact with the animals with no visible barriers – an experience known as “Zooimmersion”. The 320,000 m2 park is divided into four sections: Asia, Europe, America, and Pangea. All four zones have a wide range of shows and entertainment, and a variety of restaurants to choose from.
Soak up the sun at one of the many beaches
Family holidays in Alicante won’t be complete without a trip to the beach. Most beaches in Alicante have shallow bays, which are perfect for younger kids. Guardamar del Segura has some of the finest beaches in Alicante, with 10 kilometres of fine white sand, crystal-clear waters, and fragrant pine forests as a backdrop. Visitors can swim in the pleasant waters, engage in exciting water sports, or just relax and soak up the sun.
