Authoritarian Parenting
Authoritarian parenting, also known as ‘strict parenting’, is where parents establish the rules and expect children to follow it. Children don’t usually have a say in the matter, and they’re likely to be punished if the set rules aren’t followed. This type of parenting style doesn’t offer much room for dialogue between parent and child, and “Because I said so” is a popular phrase parents dish out when children challenge the rules or ask questions. While rules and structure are necessary for healthy child development, it can be dangerous to overdo it. It is important to balance out the structure with open communication, so your child understands why it’s important for them to follow the rules.
Permissive Parenting
Permissive parenting styles doesn’t offer much discipline or boundaries. Parents tend to be lenient and not very demanding, unless there’s a serious problem. Permissive parents are usually very responsive and nurturing, however, the lack of discipline might lead to problematic behaviour. Permissive parents take on a ‘friend’ role, they encourage their children to talk to them but don’t always discourage bad behaviour. This might seem like the easy way out, but the lack of authority can lead to behavioural problems in children. Children tend to become spoiled and bossy, and are prone to struggle academically.
Authoritative Parenting
Out of the four parenting styles, authoritative parenting is the most recommended. They have a set of rules they expect their children to follow, but they’re much more democratic about it compared to authoritarian parents. They often have reasons for their rules and take their children’s feelings into consideration when setting limits – unlike authoritarian parents, where there are no exceptions to the rule. Authoritative parents tend to use consequences instead of punishments, and they reinforce good behaviour with praise and rewards. This type of parenting style creates the healthiest environment for a growing child, and helps to foster a cooperative relationship between parent and child. Children raised with this parenting style tend to have well-developed social skills, good emotional control, and are more prone to being successful and happy.
Uninvolved Parenting
Uninvolved parenting is one of the least effective parenting styles, and potentially the most harmful. It is characterised by few demands, low responsiveness, and little communication. Uninvolved parents tend to have little knowledge about parenting and child development. While these parents fulfill the child’s basic needs, they tend to neglect emotional needs. Children raised by uninvolved parents will most likely have low self-esteem and poor academic skills.
Parenting styles will have a direct impact on children’s behaviour, but this can also be influenced by culture, social influences, and temperament. Nurturing your kids and giving them the proper attention is essential for their development. Going on a holiday is a great way to spend uninterrupted time with them and build a great bond.
